Our Story

A 100% black owned company founded in 2008 as an advocate and champion for the revitalisation of township and rural economies as future economic hubs.
The SBDI’s mission is to ensure meaningful participation of black people in South Africa’s economy, and with special focus on women and youth
SBDI has become synonymous with SMME and entrepreneurship development, throughefforts and initiatives to catapult SMMEs from the periphery to the epicentre of the mainstream economy.
From inception, the company positioned itself as the champion and dependable thought leadership institution that contributes towards the formulation of policies and strategies that shapes the enterprise and supplier development pathways for small enterprises, and focusses on the following key drivers within the enterprise development ecosystem:
- Enterprise
- Entrepreneur
- Entrepreneurship
These are the three pillars within which the supplier development ethic informs major value chains of large companies. These pillars constitute the competencies and focus of the SBDI’s value proposition.

Where We Stand As SBDI – Instead Of Sitting By With Folded Arms

A number of social projects take place in vulnerable township and rural communities throughout South Africa.
- Including: small scale efforts, cooperatives, small and micro businesses driven by women and a minimal amount by the youth.
The efforts these individuals make are driven by survival instincts in order to ensure their families are fed.
These are the initiatives which require encouragement and support of appropriate resources and effective planning.

South Africa is an abundantly filled country with opportunities and resources.
There are individuals and business who have gained financially, to the contrary; the majority of the population fall below the breadline: constituting constant hunger and poverty without any resolve.

Those within close proximity to these resources gain abundant wealth; constructed through a sophisticated system, created for and by major value chains of major sectors of the economy – administered by the “old boys club”.
The shadow of these systems loom over the metropolis of the country. The further away these inhibited communities are from the metropolis – the more disadvantaged they become from becoming apart of the system.

The SBDI’s mandate is to resolve economic development challenges in the South African township and rural economies; by introducing a number of key interventions of support.

This notion is conceived by the SBDI, designed with the affected communities as a means to flourish and break out of the margins.

SBDI’s strategy is a linkage to the small scale projects of these spaces of expansion at a district, regional and provincial scale.

In 2014, the SBDI established an annual Policy Colloquium in partnership with the newly established Depart of Small Business Development (DSBD):
- Under the umbrella of the National SMME Policy Colloquium, which was launched at the IDC in October.
This was brought together through: key SMME practitioners, SMMEs, academics, business schools, business organisations and business chambers, developmental financial institutions, various national, provincial and governmental departments.
The partnership with the DSBD was established over a five year collaboration agreement

SBDI played a significant role in contributing to the SMME Policy formulation; notably the adoption of the SMME Master Plan by the Department of Small Business Development
